White Mountain Academic Summer Overnight Program
Description

We
invite you send your son or daughter to the
Academic Summer Program at the White Mountain School
in Bethlehem, NH. While this program has
been strong success for the past few years, we are
motivated by constant innovation in order to provide
the very best academic summer enrichment programming
in the nation.
Based on input from parents and
our own drive and ambition, we have developed the
following additions to complement our traditional programs
(writing, public speaking, leadership and Math).
Our goal is to serve the needs of all veteran
students. Innovative initiatives include:
Pre-Law Program
Innovative Program: Unique curriculum will
focus on preparation for becoming a lawyer as part
of career. Students will focus on types of law that
can be pursued in law school, as well as avenues for
future career paths.
Q&A with Lawyers: Students will have the
chance to talk with existing lawyers about their
careers and the future of the legal profession.
Case Work: Students will engage in rigorous
academic inquiry, using actual case law in examining
legal decisions and precedents.
Public Speaking: Our instructors will lead
students in the important craft of presenting your
arguments to an audience, with an emphasis on
evidence.
Academic Focus: The program will focus
academically on the following areas of law:
Constitutional Law; Corporate Law; Criminal Law;
Public Interest Law; Estates and Trusts; Copyright
and Patents; International Law.
Pre-Med Program:
Our Pre-Med program will focus students on the life
of a doctor, and the preparation the field of
medicine will demand.
Q &A Session with Medical Students:
Students who have been successful in attaining
admission to Medical School will share their
insights into what helped them succeed in both high
school and college. The discussion will focus on
course selection, extracurricular choices, and
organization of time.
Site Visit: Students will visit a local
health care facility, and have the opportunity to
interact with live doctors in a variety of settings.
Curriculum: Instructors will examine the
different types of medical practice that are
available, and discuss the options for each of these
career paths. Emphasis will be placed on proper high
school preparation, as well as the different type of
pre-medical programs that are offered in colleges
and universities.
Honors Track:
Admission to this level of
course work is very competitive, and restricted to
students with strong academic credentials and
motivation. The work load in these sections will
help prepare students for Honors level, and Advanced
Placement Level work in high school. This track is
intended for students who want more work, and thrive
under challenging academic conditions.
Politics and Economics:
This challenging course will
examine the world of money and entrepreneurship, and
how wealth creation is aided, or curtailed, by
political policies at the Macro Level. Students will
also trace the history of boom and bust economic
cycles, from the tulip in the Netherlands to the
tech boom, housing boom, and oil commodity bubble.
The course will involve extensive reading, writing,
and hands-one work in: creating an investment
portfolio; researching companies; developing a
business plan; venture capital and private equity;
the globalization of stock exchanges; opportunities
in emerging markets; the role of central bankers,
including the Federal Reserve; foreign exchange and
the future role of the dollar, Euro, and Yuan; and
the rise of “sovereign wealth funds.” Special focus
will be placed on reviewing the events of 2008, and
examining policy prescriptions of the new
administration, as well as economists like Nouriel
Roubini and Niall Ferguson. Students will compete in
developing a viable business plan, and will take
part in a simulated investment game. Guest speakers
will offer their own successful experience as an
example for students. This academic experience
provides an excellent foundation for students
interested in majoring in economics,
entrepreneurship, and business.
National Politics and
Leadership:

This course will discuss the
important issues confronting politicians in the
important presidential election year of 2008: fair
trade; health care; taxes; economic growth;
nationalization of banking industry; government
industrial policy; regulation of the financial
industry. Students will examine the records and
leadership styles of presidential candidates,
develop their own political speech, write a bill,
and develop sophisticated policy positions on
multiple burning issues. The class will be
supplemented by small group meetings with
politicians, as well as issue experts.
This class is excellent for
students interested in history, political science,
politics, public relations and law.
Altered College Visits:
Students will have the opportunity to visit the
University of Vermont; as well St. Michael’s College
and spends the afternoon in beautiful and historic
Burlington, Vermont.
Our program also includes
numerous other innovations. We hope to see you
again this July.
Besides the aforementioned subjects, we
continue to offer the following subjects:
Writing, public speaking,
debate and leadership and Math (SAT, PSAT or ISEE)
for youth during these two weeks. This competitive
scholastic program combines advanced academic
instruction in the morning with experiential
learning in the afternoon. The academic program is
enhanced through numerous excursions in the
beautiful and idyllic White Mountain region, college
visits, and notable guest speakers for students. In
addition, the hands-on learning, excursions and
activities build student self-confidence, enthusiasm
and team work.
